Big blind
In flop-style poker games, blinds are imposed on players, which are basically forced bets that players to the left of the dealer button have to post. There are usually two blinds in a game, the big blind and the small blind.
The big blind is always the player sitting to the left of the small blind, who is the player immediately to the left of the dealer button. The big blind is usually equal to the minimum bet amount.
After the blinds have been posted and the cards have been dealt, the player sitting to the left of the big blind starts the first betting round.
Mostly used in games such as Texas hold’em and Omaha hold’em, blinds ensure that there is a regular cost to entering the game, which in turn encourages players to enter the pot so as to make up for this expense. As these games are often played without antes, which allows a player to fold without having to place a bet, blinds are often a good way to encourage players to participate in the pot.
