Behind

Behind in poker literally means lagging behind or losing. When a player does not have a particularly strong set of hands, s/he is said to be behind a player with a stronger hand. For example, Player A is said to be behind Player B, if Player A only has jacks, while Player B has kings.

But being behind does not mean that the player is definitely going to lose, just that currently the position of the player is not the best.

A different usage of behind is when a player wishes to denote or describe the money in play, but which is not visible to other players, like in the form of chips. So if Player A says, “I have $50 behind”, it means he wants $50 worth chips to be put into play immediately.

Behind can also be used to denote the position of the player on the table, acting after. So if suppose the deal being played one position to the left of Player A, then Player A is said to be behind the deal. Now Player B, who is sitting to the left of Player A, is said to be behind Player A, with reference to his position on the table.

So, if someone asks you whether you are behind or ahead in the game, it could be with reference to your position on the table, or whether you winning or losing in the game.
