Aggressive, aggression
When a player indulges in a lot of opens and raises, s/he is generally considered as an aggressive player. On the other hand if the player relies more on calls and checks s/he is considered a passive player. An aggressive player stands the chance of making some money if he passes off weak hands in a bluff.
But only a single style of playing can be disadvantageous as a solely aggressive player, who is playing many inferior hands is also known as a maniac, and this fact can be exploited by skilled players. A maniac will be subjected to many calls and isolation plays. Though it is not advised to play as a maniac; aggressive play is generally considered better than passive play.
Lack of aggressive play on the other hand will result in opponent players folding whenever a player bets or raises. So it is important to judge the right amount of aggressiveness to be employed in a game. Two factors impacting this decision include the game being played as well as the overall tendencies of the opponent players.
Aggression in a game can be computed using game theory, and there are some rules which govern its use. For example, extremely strong hands must be played very aggressively. In particular, a propositional hand, which means a hand which is likely to win with either a flush or a straight, can be played with an aggressive style.
Two key advantages achieved by this style are that when in the future the hand improves, the size of the pot has been increased due to the earlier aggression, which in turn will mean a larger win. The other is that, this style of aggressive plays also results in advertising, so in the future raises, particularly with strong hands, opponents will take in to account that the former actions indicate that the player has a strong drawing hand instead of just a high pair.
This second reason is actually advertising as the player is advertising himself as a strong or aggressive player. So basically when a player advertises himself as a player who is willing to gamble hard or aggressively even with weak cards, the size of the pot will definitely increase, thus resulting in larger winnings when the player has some actual strong cards.
