Advertise

Advertisement is the act of showing yourself to be a particular style of player to your opponents, either by obvious play or even by exposing some of your cards. Usually advertisement involves a player putting him or herself in a disadvantage at that moment just to give a false impression to opponent players, and to gain an advantage later in the game.

The main reason to advertise is to lull opponents into a false sense of advantage, and then to cause them to make a wrong move in the future. Advertisement can also be done by showing oneself to be a solid and calm player, thereby making it easier to bluff opponents. Usually the other players end up giving the advertising player more action, particularly when you make a legitimate hand.

Some popular techniques used while advertisement include, when a player makes a bad bluff, or bluffs regularly to give the impression that the player makes too many obvious bluffs, or even show good hands every time, to indicate that you hardly bluff at all, allowing room for a successful bluff in the future or even that your opponents fold when you do.

Allowing yourself to be caught bluffing is the most popular means of advertising, as this allows a player to cash in on good hands later in the game. The whole point is to present yourself as a loose player, or someone who plays a weak game. Most people rely on first impressions, though it might be difficult to deceive professional players.

Another technique of advertising that many players follow, particularly in Texas hold’em, is to show down top pair, coupled with a weak kicker, or middle pair or even a gut shot draw that missed. Now overall these hands have very little intrinsic value, so it will be advantageous to play them early on in the game, as it will pay off later.

Apart from these, anything that a player does to mislead or manipulate his or her opponents viewpoint on themselves is also known as advertising. This could also include looking nervous all the time, or appearing animated, when in fact the person is quite controlled and is only trying to mislead his opponents into thinking he is easy to read.
